The bowl in the log
Turning green timber into bowls, one long curl at a time.

A fresh log of wet timber is cut to a rough round on the bandsaw and mounted on the lathe. The first cuts are loud and fast, shavings flying over the turner's shoulder.
Green wood is soft and kind to tools, but it moves as it dries. Turners rough the bowl out thick, leave it to season for months, then come back and turn it true.
